Video Rewind Show-Blast from the Past!

The Video Rewind Show brought some of us back to our younger days when our lives consisted of video games and junk food. Pizza, chips, cookies, candy… We had the works! A special thanks goes out to the members that brought some of our favorite goodies to share.

Our judge for the show was
Brandon Pence, a well known graphic artist in our art community. Brandon awarded Daniel Kocher 1st place for his piece titled “PM-OD.” Daniel, who also took 1st place in our last show, has been awarded for his whimsical, stylistic illustrations painted in vivid colors.

The night ended with the crafting of perler beads which were constructed into 8-bit video game characters and sprites. Fun was definitely had by all who attended. Who knows what’s in store for the shows in 2012. I hope to see you at the next one!

Digital Artist Brandon Pence – Solo Digital Art Exhibit This Friday!

One of the NWFLAA founding members and 1st place winner of the Lyrically Inspired exhibit has his first solo show this Friday at the Full Circle Gallery in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.

Below is the press release:

My work is far from subtle and that is intentional. I don’t craft realistic images with subtle highlights and realistic shadows. I go as extreme as I feel necessary, which I feel conveys the constant pull between order and chaos.

Each work I create to stand individually.  There are very rarely recurring themes.  The only patterns that emerge are found in the use of the female form as well as the “overload” technique I utilize, which also encompasses my love for bright colors.  I find that the female is not only beautiful, but also conveys weakness and pain in a very natural, easy manner.  I take an image that I find particularly beautiful or intriguing and begin filling the image up with many different elements.  Every final work has, on average, 500 layers (or pieces) that comprise it.  The sheer number of layers allows me to look back at my work and see something different in it each time, long after it was completed.

My motivation to create comes from the world around me – be it beauty, repulsion, or various art forms, with music being my biggest inspiration.  The stories contained in a song help transport me out of my current reality and let my mind roam free. I particularly enjoy concept albums where the entire album is a single story. One artist that constantly inspires me is David Bowie. His invariable tonal and style changes excite my imagination and when in the moment, it feels like the art creates itself. The music flows through me, through my heart and directly into my hands. At times I feel like a mere puppet and I become travel companions with my art – we evolve, inspire, teach and learn from each other.

“…and all that could have been…” is not an exhibit meant to offend, though it may appear that way at first.  The pieces are meant to invoke thought and discussion on any topic they inspire, as well as ask the question, “What if…?”  For this exhibit, I felt compelled to step out of my comfort zone and push myself to focus a bit more on association between themes and less on the individuality of the pieces.  Though each piece is still capable of being seen apart from the rest, I feel as if I accomplished my intended goal and the result is a physical manifestation of my journey as an artist.

Awesome short film – Dix

YouTube Preview Image

I recently ran across this animated French short film and absolutely love it. I could interpret it for hours but in short, I think it’s an awesome visual representation of the struggle we go through to come to peace with ourselves as well as the struggles we go through when we explore ourselves.

Awesome film.
